While millions of Canadians are taking advantage of the government’s extended June 1st, 2020 deadline to file their 2019 personal tax returns, Millards Chartered Professional Accountants reminds you that the deadline is fast approaching and that filling a tax return by June 1st could be important.
Canada Revenue Agency says filing a tax return by the deadline is required for them to access several key benefit programs… even if you have no income.
Those programs include the Canada Child Benefit, the GST/HST Credit, the Disability Tax Credit and the Child Disability Benefit.
In response to COVID-19, the deadline to file individual income tax returns this year was extended to June 1st from April 30th. The deadline to pay off a balance if you owe money has been extended to Aug. 31st.
Please also be aware that if you have not submitted your 2018 returns, any COVID-19 help you may have otherwise been entitled to could be at risk. CRA indicates that some financial aid programs like the ramped up GST/HST credit payments and increased Canada Child Benefit cheques are calculated based on information from the 2018 tax returns.

Please note that tax documents being dropped off will be quarantined for 2-3 days as part of our COVID 19 protocol. As a result, we encourage you to get your documents in very soon to ensure that your return can be completed and filed by the June 1st deadline.
