The 2016 Millards Scholarship Award has been awarded to Elizabeth Rogers, a 14 year old competitive skater that has impressed the selection committee with her accomplishments and character.

As a former competitive figure skater herself, Julie Baetz, CPA, CA, LPA and partner at Millards Chartered Professional Accountants knows the level of commitment and perseverance required to get attention in a crowded field.

“We were struck by Elizabeth’s passion for her sport and her desire to teach others. She probably skates 4-5 times per week and that requires a unique level of drive and motivation. She stood out to us for her work ethic, willingness to help others and positive attitude.”

Since it’s creation in 1947, The Brant Skating Club has nurtured a number of high calibre skaters. Baetz is the Treasurer for the local skating club and her love for the sport has brought her back to the Club as a volunteer.

“Elizabeth intends to pursue a competitive skating career and has plans to coach. She wants to share her training with others. Our sport could not flourish without qualified teachers willing to give their time and Elizabeth has demonstrated her eagerness to pass her knowledge to younger skaters.”

The Millards Scholarship Award is a new scholarship. The $1,000 annual award recognizes a student with outstanding abilities, attributes and dedication to the sport of competitive figure skating. 5 students applied with the youngest submission coming from an 8 year old club member. The scholarship money must be used by the recipient to offset the costs of training, equipment and expenses connected to the sport.

“Elizabeth didn’t start skating until she was 8 1/2. That’s late compared to many skaters and so she has excelled in a relatively short period of time.”

The scholarship was awarded to Elizabeth at the Brant Skating Club Award Banquet on April 2nd at the Brantford Civic Centre. The banquet paid tribute to the a number of young skaters for their outstanding achievements.

Coached by Nancy Osborn, Elizabeth has applied to the Laurier Program at BCI and has ambitions to perform in Disney On Ice.

“We’re proud of Elizabeth and we hope this scholarship helps her grow and achieve her goals.”
